Macular Hole Surgery Or Vitrectomy Surgery
Macular hole surgery or vitrectomy is an eye surgery that involves several procedures. It uses specific methods and specialized apparatus to restore retinal diseases which is sometime considered as untreatable. Vitrectomy as the name suggests, the surgery involves the exclusion of the vitreous gel and the retina of the eye. During the operations, the vitreous gel is excluded using a light and tiny cutting tool and a particular saline solution is being replaced to substitute the excluded part of the eye. The surgeon uses fiber optic light to shed light within the eye during the surgery. General and local anesthesia is being used while the surgery is done in the operating room. Contact lenses and operating microscope are also use to permit a lucid vision of eye's retina and vitreous gel.
Surgical procedure or operations is commonly performed by vitreoretinal surgeons. Patients are usually referred to ophthalmologist and optometrist for vitreoretinal management and to perform laser procedures during surgery.
The surgery is done when there is a difficulty in eye sight that is usually caused by foreign objects that enters the eye's retina. The blood is an exact example of this foreign object which is caused by diabetic vitreous hemorrhage. Here are some reasons why the vitrectomy surgery is performed: macular hole, epiretinal membrane, retinal detachment, endophthalmitis, proliferative vitreoretinopathy, retrieval of lens nucleus and intraocular foreign body removal.
Most vitrectomy operation is made through a small opening from the eye's front but some surgeons penetrated it from the eye's pars plana. This kind of operation is called pars Plana Vitrectomy. By using this kind of surgery, damages to eye's crystalline lens and retina retina can be avoided.
Just like other operation, there are some risks in performing this surgery. Some of these are: retinal detachment, fluid buildup in the eye's retina, hemorrhage in the vitreous gel and possible eye infection.
